From here Maulvi Sahib came up with the idea of ​​compiling his dictionary according to the principles of modern lexicography.

In 1878, he started publishing a dictionary in the form of a magazine called Armaghan-e-Delhi. Later, when the patronage of Nizam Deccan Mehboob Ali Khan became available, he started publishing this dictionary under the name of Farhang-e-Asifia instead of the title of Asif of Nizam Deccan.

Farhang-e-Asifia is not just a dictionary but Syed Ahmad Dehlavi has provided information in the form of an encyclopedia in great detail under certain entries. For example, under the Awliya of India, detailed living conditions of 43 different Sufis are listed. In addition, the dictionary is a marquee of the nineteenth century Ganga-Jamni civilization, which contains a collection of words related to the customs, costumes, poetry, literary and scientific terms, jewelry, food and drink, sitting and dismissal, etc. of that period. Which is not available anywhere else.

The first two volumes of this great dictionary were published in 1888, the third volume in 1898, and the fourth and final volume in 1902. Subsequently, several editions of this dictionary were published in India and Pakistan, but surprisingly, they were reprinted exactly, and the letter that was given at the end of the original dictionary, was also published every time.  A modern computerized edition has also been published.
